This coming January, Physician Assistant students from Quinnipiac University will once again be volunteering on one of Health Horizons International's (HHI) three annual medical service trips, working with HHI's community health workers and staff as well as five family physicians from Connecticut. The team will be providing primary health care services, treatment for chronic and infectious illnesses, and health education to nearly 450 patients in four communities in the Puerto Plata province. Quinnipiac University PA students have been volunteering with HHI since its inception in 2009.

However, this trip is more than a week-long experience -- it fits into a year-round model of promoting community health. HHI provides continuity of care for more than 600 individuals, including 150 with chronic diseases, by operating primary health care field clinics every four months and training community health workers who are supported by HHI's full-time staff. By developing a network of local health care referral partners, HHI provides follow-up and life-changing medical care to more than 200 people each year. HHI also addresses the underlying causes of illness by conducting public health research, implementing prevention programs for chronic and infectious diseases, and supporting local efforts to improve public health infrastructure for clean water and sanitation.

To show your support for an individual student, please select their name in the "Apply my donation to" section, or you may donate generally to "MSTs - QU." All donations made to this cause will be used to fund follow-up care for the most critically ill patients we treat. HHI is a small organization with nearly half of its funding coming from individual donors, so the support of people like you is crucial to the success of our mission. One hundred percent of the money donated on this page will be used to pay for medical care for people who could not otherwise afford it.
